Tourist victimization in and around the artificial environment

Despite a new emphasis on tourism and the resulting victimization of travelers to the artificial environments, such as those offered in Las Vegas and Orlando, little empirical research has been conducted to estimate the extent to which the traveler is victimized when in these different areas. Research reported in this paper is a result of a survey of travelers who were victimized in Southern Nevada, Clark County, during the summer of 1996; Information was gathered from questions which were asked on the survey and combined with data on the victim, which was taken off the victims\u27 original crime reports. This data provided insight on the victims\u27 opinions on how their victimization was handled, and also provided information about previous victimization in their own home town, which was combined with information on their age, race, gender, work status, and professional background

The value of play for conflict management: a case study

This is a case study of a conflict management intervention in two secondary schools in post-apartheid South Africa.  The feature of the intervention that we examine is the use of play as an educational strategy. The literature attests  that play can facilitate change by allowing learners freedom to change their behaviour and opportunities to explore their new identities. The context of the case revealed that conflicts had become deeply entrenched over  time. The literature on conflict management suggests that such situations can change if approached in the right way. In the article we describe the intervention and evaluate it with the help of feedback received from participants and facilitators. In the evaluation we found that the participants were able to overcome prejudices and develop democratic approaches to conflict. The evaluation was repeated several months later, when it was found that the benefits of the workshop had been maintained, with the result that the participants were engaging in healthier relationships. Solar-insolation-induced changes in the coma morphology of comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko. Optical monitoring with the Nordic Optical Telescope

Context. 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko (67P/C-G) is a short-period Jupiter family comet with an orbital period of 6.55 years. Being the target comet of ESA’s Rosetta mission, 67P/C-G has become one of the most intensively studied minor bodies of the Solar System. The Rosetta Orbiter and the Philae Lander have brought us unique information about the structure and activity of the comet nucleus, as well as its activity along the orbit, composition of gas, and dust particles emitted into the coma. However, as Rosetta stayed in very close proximity to the cometary nucleus (less than 500 km with a few short excursions reaching up to 1500 km), it could not see the global picture of a coma at the scales reachable by telescopic observations (103 - 105 km). Aims. In this work we aim to connect in-situ observations made by Rosetta with the morphological evolution of the coma structures monitored by the ground-based observations. In particular, we concentrate on causal relationships between the coma morphology and evolution observed with the Nordic Optical Telescope (NOT) in the Canary Islands, and the seasonal changes of the insolation and the activity of the comet observed by the Rosetta instruments. Methods. Comet 67P/C-G was monitored with the NOT in imaging mode in two colors. Imaging optical observations were performed roughly on a weekly basis, which provides good coverage of short- and long-term variability. With the three dimensional modeling of the coma produced by active regions on the Southern Hemisphere, we aim to qualify the observed morphology by connecting it to the activity observed by Rosetta. Results. During our monitoring program, we detected major changes in the coma morphology of comet 67P/C-G. These were longterm and long-lasting changes. They do not represent any sudden outburst or short transient event, but are connected to seasonal changes of the surface insolation and the emergence of new active regions on the irregular shaped comet nucleus. We have also found significant deviations in morphological changes from the prediction models based on previous apparitions of 67P/C-G, like the time delay of the morphology changes and the reduced activity in the Northern Hemisphere. According to our modeling of coma structures and geometry of observations, the changes are clearly connected with the activity in the Southern Hemisphere observed by the Rosetta spacecraft

Proper municipal accounting is basic to efficient city administration. Hence, if good municipal government is to prevail, the accounting system must be so designed and operated as to produce the required fiscal information. For this reason the Municipal Technical Advisory Service is grateful for the opportunity to make available to municipal finance officers and other officials in Tennessee this publication, a Manual of Accounts. The manual is the first of a series of important technical publications in this field; two others now in preparation are scheduled for publication within the coming year
